In the Mouth of Madness (John Carpenter, 1994)
i didn't really care for this when i first watched it as a Teen, i think i was expecting a more direct Lovecraft adaptation and so was put off by it being something other than that. now that i'm older, i think the best things that resulted from Lovecraft's work were more interesting & talented people taking his ideas and running with them, but honestly, this isn't even doing that! the Lovecraft pastiche is more or less just set dressing, the bestselling horror author writing his books into reality could have been writing anything at all, and it still would have been a great movie. and it is great! Sam Neill (RIP 😭) is fantastic, as always, the practical effects are goopy as all hell, and the more sparingly used digital effects absolutely hold up 30 years later. watching Trent's hold on reality slowly fail, until it all snaps suddenly back into place as he realizes what he actually is is a wonderful time.
