smaller things
so a thing that keeps happening is, i will do something that seems worth posting about, but not feel like posting about it at that moment, and then time passes, and more things keep happening, and i now have a huge katamari of a draft post in my head that is truly daunting to try to imagine bringing into the world. so i'm going to try to post about littler things more.
so, to start with...
watching
folk horror! a few weeks ago (a month ago? longer? like i said, i've been struggling to keep up with things!) comrade Julian mentioned that Severin Films was having their yearly sale, and that the second volume of their magisterial folk horror box set series, All the Haunts Be Ours, would be half-off for a day. now, mind you, half-off of a $290 box is still an awful lot of money, even if the math works out very favorably on a per-film basis, but i boldly asked my partner anyway, and they said "um, probably not!", which is what i expected! and then a few hours later, they remembered that their pay schedule worked out so that they were getting three paychecks in July, and so yeah, why not, go ahead! in the meantime, i had dug around a bit and found a scratch-and-dent copy on eBay for a little bit more than half-off, and went with that one. as it turned out i absolutely would not have noticed the scratches and/or dents if i had not been told in advance that they were there, so that was a pretty solid decision!
but, acquiring the new Big Box o' Folk Horror did make me feel slightly guilty about having only watched one film from the first Big Box o' Folk Horror (the incredible Penda's Fen, which apparently i never put up on letterboxd; i guess i'll do that when i get to it again!), and so i determined that i would watch through it before i started on the new one. and so, i have, sometimes a couple films a week, sometimes less frequently, as the whim and other responsibilities allows.
i don't want to make a huge post about all those movies, so instead, i'm just going to start cross-posting my letterboxd reviews here, backdated to when i originally wrote it. i'll start with this folk horror binge, but include things i've seen outside of it (maybe, eventually, i'll import my entire archive, too). some of these reviews are very scant, but i do try to come up with at least a couple of things to say about the film and what it's doing. i'm trying to build up my media literacy a bit, because i've been affected by the great dumbing-down of culture just like everyone else.
