Viy (Georgi Kropachyov and Konstantin Ershov, 1967)

i want to like this a lot more than i did. the practical effects and cinematography during Brutus's first encounter with the witch and the scenes where he's holding vigil for her in the church were astounding; everything in between these was utterly tedious. the sotnik's men recall the bumbling farmers of Leptirica; Brutus himself is not substantially more interesting or competent, though his actor did a great job portraying a sort of increasingly manic intensity over several days of sleep deprivation and supernatural haranguing.
